I’ve been blogging for almost seven SIX years and today I received my first not so nice message from a reader. Now what’s a girl to do when this happens. I could have easily replied to the message directly or ignore it all together…but today. I decided to nut it out and share with you. I hope you take the time to watch it and enjoy.

I read you blog just about daily, I enjoy seeing what you and your family are up to.

I think you did a good job with this video and I will say – for someone who has been blogging only a year I was hurt the first few times I commented and didnt get a reply (in general, not helloowl specific)- or mentioned my blog and no one visited.
But then after a few weeks i realised that even my very favorite blogs on the net would go un-read for weeks at a time. And once I started a business – even the most exciting emails would lay around un-answered because I have a two yr old, am a single mum and sometimes the stuff on the computer doesn’t matter as much as what is happening in life.
Now a comment is exciting, a response to a comment is nice and an email is really cool. But I am not actually online to make friends, I have made some and hope that I do more, but i am here primarily to have a voice in the world – say what I need to say weather anyone listens or not. And to run a business or two along the way.
I comment because I felt something about the blog post and want to acknowledge the writing for doing a good job but I don’t comment to get comments or responses.
I live in the world to make friends and connect with ppl – and i think if that happens online it is a bonus!

Gosh, I try to reply to ‘most’ posts if they have a blog or a reply email address…. But I don’t get to them all and I’m lucky to get two comments on a post.
I hate the idea that you HAVE to ‘comment back’! It just leads to ungenuine replies and blog comments that are meaningless…

Blogging is not like a normal conversation – blogging is about posting a thought, a moment, a like, a passion, a vice, a niggle, a vlog, a how to, just to name a few……
Blogging can not be meeting everyones expectations because then it wouldn’t be “our voice”.
Danni – I read your blog and never once have “expected” you to reply to my comment.
I know you visit mine occasionally and I don’t “expect” you to comment – if you do that is a bonus if you don’t I am happy for the “page hit”.
You take care of yourself and your soul – I too was a target for a few hate emails and anonymous comments earlier last month – what a trying time that was for mind battles within myself. Would I let this inferior being take away the real me – never.
I hope they burn in envy which is really what it was all about.

I watched this twice, once when you first posted and then again this morning. Everything you say is so very true and was a very honest account. I’m new to the whole blogging thing (personal blogging anyway) and I have always been of the opinion that it is going to take me a while to build the realtionships that some bloggers have. I have only seen this now, but I have a couple of my own comments.
I think my email had a lot more than a ‘I’m a spoilt brat, you don’t comment on my blog so I find you rude’ notion, and I apologise if you took it that way. It was more of a vent, having for the past several months followed your blog, commented on your blog, messaged you via twitter, linked back to you in my very own posts, and so forth and received absolutely nothing back.
You said it yourself – ‘a sense of community’. In order for a sense of community to exist, it must be contributed to from both parties / sides. For a long time it has been very one sided, and I guess it got to be that there was never any form of thanks or acknowledgment (take this as you will).
I like how you’ve commented, or responded to various posts here – it takes effort, and if anything, shows you do care. It only takes an acknowledgment, or a thanks, to make someone’s day. As you get on your blog, and as you feel when it happens.. i guess it’s just nice to feel that way back.
But if anything comes from that email, I am glad I inspired you. It is a good thing.

Nicole I’m glad you commented. I really didn’t mean to offend you in any way and it wasn’t sole targeted at you. You had a lot of good points in your email and your were right about a lot of them too.
The thing you couldn’t see was how frustrating my old blog was an how I guess I had given up on it waiting for the change to wordpress.
I’ve actually been to check out your blog a few times and it always comes up listed as private so not much I can do about that.
